CHARLESTON - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued a statement late Aug. 4 about the death of former Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Health and Human Resources, Dr. Michael Lewis.
"Joanne and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Lewis," Tomblin said in the statement. "Throughout his career, he was a kind, compassionate healthcare advocate who dedicated his life to the health of all West Virginians."
Tomblin said in the statement he was grateful to Lewis' service to the people of West Virginia as Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences at the Higher Education Policy Commission.
"Our prayers are with Mike's wife, Mino, and his two wonderful daughters Beth and Tana during this very difficult time," Tomblin said.
Lewis resigned from his DHHR position June 30, 2012, after 18 months as DHHR cabinet secretary, citing health issues.
At that time, Tomblin said in a statement that Lewis "needs to direct his strong spirit toward his own personal health."
Tomblin named Rocco Fucillo acting secretary of DHHR, then appointed Karen Bowling of Beckley to the position July 1 this year.
