Financial Policy Development

Coordinates WVHA advocacy efforts and develops Association policy with regard to Medicare, Medicaid, PEIA and other governmental payor financing issues and the development of managed care in West Virginia.
Provides Data services and information, provides guidelines and suggests strategies to assist member hospitals to effectively monitor financial health.




Patient Safety/Education

Through WVHA's subsidiary, the Healthcare Education Foundation of West Virginia, Inc. (HEF), offers ongoing educational programs to members on patient safety methodology, changes in health care delivery, standards for licensure/accreditation, and financial and quality management, all focused on enhancing hospital operations and performance.

  Responsible for issues related to hospital licensure, quality improvement organization activities, medical practice acts, licensing boards and actions, quality, utilization review, risk management, malpractice, medical records, infection control, outcome measurement, medical staff issues, hospital accreditation issues, AHA data profiles, database development and maintenance, and Internet/Intranet development and maintenance.



Rural Health Policy

  Develops, coordinates and implements rural health policy. Coordinates activities of small/rural hospital committee and long-term committee. Coordinates and is responsible for WVHA activities with regard to network development, rural managed care issues, sub-acute care, and certificate of need and health planning issues.




Legislative Advocacy/Grassroots and Communications

Coordinates WVHA legislative strategy and advocacy efforts. Develops legislative policy and strategy, monitors state and federal policy that affects health care and hospitals and implements plan to address legislative priorities for the Association. Assists hospitals with cultivating relationships with government officials at all levels.

Updates members on pending legislation and regulations. Develops publications and other materials to inform and educate the media and public about health care issues.

Grassroots Advocacy - coordinates grassroots advocacy activities through local hospital networks (HOSNET) to support WVHA public policy agenda.

Political Action - Organizes fundraising campaigns and coordinates the endorsement process of statewide elected officials and candidates through the hospital political action committee (HOSPAC).




Coalition for a Tobacco-Free West Virginia

The WVHA serves as the home for the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free West Virginia. The mission of the Coalition is to educate the public about tobacco-related issues and advocate for policies that reduce, with the intent to eliminate, tobacco use in West Virginia. The Steering Committee of the Coalition is comprised of representatives of the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, West Virginia Hospital Association, West Virginia State Medical Association, and 3-4 members-at-large.



Day One Program

  This grant funded program provides information, training and educational materials to hospitals, healthcare providers, organizations and agencies that provide services to expectant and new parents. The Day One program is designed to reach these new parents with educational information related to infant brain development and the need and opportunities for appropriate sensory stimulation to enhance brain development and future learning ability. The program also addresses issues related to child development, health and safety such exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke, breastfeeding, oral health and early literacy.


Coalition for Quality Health Care

  Since 1997, the West Virginia Hospital Association, along with physician and other health care leaders in the state of West Virginia have worked toward building a sustainable collaborative effort between the hospital and physician communities to look at clinical variations, and to identify and address opportunities to improve care.

The grant funded projects have included studies on: Urology study of TURP's (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate), a Cardiovascular Health (CVH) study on Acute Myocardial Infarction, and a Breast Surgery Study Group.
